Undergoing a Root Canal Can Alleviate Pain & Eliminate the Need for Extraction

If you are suffering from serious tooth pain, you may have an infection requiring a root canal procedure. Infection within the tooth can occur when there is extensive decay or damage. It is important to seek treatment as soon as possible because the severity of your condition may reach a point at which extraction is the only solution. Dr. Michael Bixby in Red Bank, NJ, can provide a virtually painless root canal procedure that involves removing the infected soft tissue from within the tooth and restoring the remaining tissue with a dental crown.

Signs of Dental Infection

For many patients, a dental infection is very uncomfortable, with symptoms often including:

  • Swelling and tenderness of surrounding tissues
  • A toothache
  • Heightened sensitivity to hot and cold

You may also notice discoloration of the tooth, growth of an abscess, or consistent bad breath as your condition worsens. However, some patients do not experience any noticeable symptoms. This is one of the many reasons why it is essential to attend your regular dental exams, at which time we can monitor for any signs of infection.

A dental infection can jeopardize a tooth unless you take prompt action.

What to Expect during Your Root Canal Treatment

While the treatment has a reputation for being painful, patients typically compare the amount of discomfort to a routine filling. This is partially due to the fact that a local anesthetic will be administered to the treatment site. Additionally, we offer both nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation for anxious patients. During your visit, we encourage you to be forward with us regarding your concerns so that we can make the accommodations necessary to ensure your comfort under our care.

The Root Canal Procedure

To begin, a small opening will be made in the tooth to provide Dr. Bixby with access to the pulp chamber and root canals, which contain blood vessels, nerves, and ligaments. He will then remove all soft tissue. Once the pulp chamber has been sterilized, the doctor will fill the inside of the tooth and root canals with gutta percha, a rubber-like substance, and seal the tooth.

Under Dr. Bixby's care, you can expect treatment that alleviates painful symptoms and provides ongoing oral health benefits.

We will then take impressions of your bite to create your custom dental crown, which will be placed over the tooth to provide protection and strength. The fabrication process typically takes about two weeks. Patients are usually provided with a temporary crown during this time. Once it is finished, you will return to our office to have your dental crown placed.
