Gentle Orthodontic Care for Invisalign® Candidates

Teeth that are misaligned or crowded can contribute to oral health problems, such as tooth decay, gum disease, worn tooth enamel, and jaw pain. Invisalign® is an orthodontic treatment that straightens teeth using a series of removable, clear aligner trays. These advanced trays are able to treat a range of orthodontic concerns. For patients who are good Invisalign® candidates, Dr. Bixby offers customized orthodontic treatment at our Red Bank, NJ, dental practice. He can help all patients understand if they qualify for treatment, and other alternatives available to them.

What Invisalign® Can Treat

The innovative Invisalign® system is able to treat a range of cosmetic and orthodontic concerns in both teens and adults. The series of clear aligners will exert a gentle pressure on teeth, shifting them into proper position. The trays can also improve jaw alignment to prevent oral health concerns such as temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders.

Approximately every two weeks, patients will move onto a new tray in the series to correct issues such as:

  • Gapped teeth
  • Overlapping teeth
  • Crowded, misaligned teeth
  • Slightly rotated teeth
  • Bite issues, including open bite
  • Jaw alignment issues such as overbite, crossbite, and underbite

Benefits of Invisalign®

Patients experience several benefits with Invisalign® that are unavailable with traditional braces. Because Invisalign® aligners are removable, patients are not restricted in the types of food that they can eat. Additionally, at-home oral hygiene, especially flossing and brushing, is much easier with Invisalign®. Patients simply remove their mouthpiece, eat, floss, brush – and then replace the tray. In addition, because Invisalign® aligners are made from a clear, smooth material, they are virtually invisible, and will not irritate the soft tissues.

Who Is Not a Candidate for Invisalign®?

Patients who are not committed to treatment, or require more advanced orthodontic procedures may not be candidates for Invisalign®. For the system to work properly, the patient must wear aligners for at least 22 hours per day. If you are not dedicated to your treatment, Invisalign® may not be right for you. In addition, our team may recommend alternative treatment for patients with more serious orthodontic concerns.

The clear aligner trays are not able to address serious orthodontic issues, including:

  • Severe malocclusion
  • Vertical misalignment
  • Significantly rotated teeth
  • Severely angled or tipped teeth

Dr. Bixby will meet with you and provide thorough recommendations based on your treatment goals and expectations.

Alternatives to Invisalign®

If you are not a candidate for Invisalign®, traditional braces may be a better option for you. This technique uses a system of brackets and wires to achieve significant orthodontic correction. The brackets may be metal, ceramic, or a clear material called monocrystalline sapphire.

Alternatively, if you only have minor concerns to address, you may be able to accomplish your aesthetic goals through cosmetic procedures such as porcelain veneers or dental bonding. These treatments can provide immediate, lasting results without shifting or repositioning teeth. Dr. Bixby will meet with you and provide thorough recommendations based on your treatment goals and expectations.
