Dental Crowns

Damaged or decaying teeth can take a toll on the health and appearance of your smile. Thankfully, your smile can be restored.

Dental crowns add strength to the teeth and prevent further damage and decay. Modern porcelain materials look just like natural teeth.

How Dental Crowns Work Protecting and Restoring a Tooth

Dental crowns are placed on top of natural teeth that have been affected by damage or decay. The crowns cover these compromised teeth completely to provide protection and restore their strength. Porcelain and tooth-colored materials are used so that a dental crown resembles a natural tooth.

Dental crowns can be used on a single tooth or several teeth for a variety of reasons:

Severe Tooth Damage

When a major cavity or crack cannot be treated with fillings, inlays, or onlays, a crown is the ideal restoration. The crown protects the remaining healthy structure of an otherwise compromised tooth.

Intrinsic Tooth Discoloration

A tooth that is intrinsically discolored cannot be treated with teeth whitening. Instead, a porcelain crown can be used to cap the discolored tooth. Porcelain crowns are common in cosmetic dentistry procedures.

Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy removes infected dental pulp, preventing the spread of inflammation and the need for tooth extraction. A crown is used to cap the treated tooth and restore a patient's biting and chewing ability.

The Cost of Dental Crowns

Average Treatment Cost

The average cost of a crown is $1,700 to 1,800 per tooth. This is a typical price range for the procedure, comparable with other dentists in the area. Keep in mind that the final cost of treatment will depend on the nature of the patient's case and any additional work a dentist must perform.

Payment and Financing Options

As a dentist who puts the health needs of patients first, Dr. Bixby wants to make dental crowns as affordable as possible as soon as treatment is needed. Our Red Bank staff can discuss insurance coverage, payment plans, and financing options during the consultation process.

The Dental Crown Procedure

Patients who experience tooth decay or damage can receive porcelain dental crowns in two easy visits to our office in Red Bank.

Initial Consultation

During the first visit, Dr. Bixby will perform a thorough examination to get an accurate idea of the health of each tooth and the condition of your mouth.

Prepping the Tooth

If a crown is needed, Dr. Bixby will prep the tooth by removing existing decay. Some of the enamel is also removed to make room for the dental crown.

Taking Impressions

Once this is done, Dr. Bixby will take an impression of the tooth. This will be used at an off-site dental lab when creating the custom crown. These labs boast high-end American craftsmanship with hand-finishing and expert attention to detail.

Temporary Crowns

Patients will be fitted with a temporary crown to wear during the two-week period in which the permanent restoration is being crafted. Patients should avoid sticky foods while their temporary crown is in place.

Placing the Custom Crown

During the second appointment, Dr. Bixby will remove the temporary crown. He will then bond the permanent crown to the prepped tooth using special cement. He will ensure a proper fit and make any adjustments necessary for the crown to blend seamlessly. Patients can then enjoy the strength of their dental crown for years to come.

Replace a Missing Tooth Crowns As Implant Restorations

Implant-Supported Crowns

As an alternative to a dental bridge, implant-supported crowns are used to replace a single missing tooth. A dental implant is surgically anchored into the jawbone and gum tissue in the tooth gap.

After the implant has fused with the tissue of the dental arch (a process known as osseointegration), it is stable enough to support a durable crown made of tooth-colored porcelain.

Custom implant restorations are indistinguishable from a natural tooth, and modern materials allow patients to bite, chew, and smile with total confidence.

"Dr. Bixby is amazing! I came to him to restore my implant. He was so kind as to explain each step of the process to me and answered any questions I had, and really took his time during my visits. He is so gentle--HE GAVE THE BEST LOCAL ANESTHESIA OF MY LIFE!!! I barely felt the pinch of the needle! And best of all, my crowns look amazing. You can’t even tell which tooth is an implant! I can’t say enough good things about Dr. Bixby. He and his assistants are awesome, and I can’t recommend them enough!" Aja H - 5 Star Review - Google
