The Symptoms of Sleep Apnea By Michael Bixby on January 08, 2018

A man with a headache in bedMany people who suffer from sleep apnea think it’s just a bad case of snoring. That’s not the case. Sleep apnea describes interruptions in a person's breathing while they are asleep. It can cause people to lose sleep or get a bad night’s sleep, as well as a host of other health problems.

The team at our Red Bank, NJ dental care center would like to go over some of the common signs and symptoms of sleep apnea so you know what to look out for.

Loud Snoring

As your breathing is interrupted, blockages in your air passages can lead to loud snoring. While snoring may be present in central sleep apnea (CSA), it is most definitely an issue in cases of obstructed sleep apnea (OSA). The prevalence in many cases of sleep apnea is what leads people to mistake this symptom of the condition for the condition itself.

Waking Up Short of Breath

A number of people who suffer from sleep apnea wind up waking up during the middle of the night short of breath. Remember: sleep apnea is not snoring but rather an interruption of your breathing. If you are waking up gasping for air or hyperventilating, you might be experiencing breathing interruptions during sleep.

Waking up frequently and general difficulty getting a full night of sleep are both signs of some sort of sleep disorder. A case of step apnea might be triggering bouts of insomnia as well.

Waking Up with Dry Mouth or a Sore Throat

Some people who suffer from sleep apnea wake up in the morning with dry mouth or a sore throat. These can both be signs of loud snoring or difficulty breathing during the night. Note these symptoms if you also have issues with snoring and insomnia.

Headaches in the Morning

Poor sleeping habits or frequent interruptions in sleep can lead to a number of problems when you are awake. Headaches are a common issue among people who are unable to get a proper night’s sleep, whether due to sleep apnea or another kind of sleep disorder.

Fatigue or Drowsiness During the Day

When breathing interruptions affect your ability to sleep at night, it can leave you feeling tired or even sleepy throughout the day. Many people who suffer from sleep apnea experience issues with fatigue and energy level.

Difficulty Concentrating

A lack of restful sleep can make it difficult to concentrate, even on simple matters. If you notice issues with concentration or attention even after a supposed full night's rest, it could be a sign that you suffer from some sort of sleep disorder such as sleep apnea.

Grogginess or Irritability

A bad night’s sleep can affect your mood. A consistent string of bad sleep can lead to issues with irritability and grogginess. Consider your mood throughout the day if it’s paired with headaches or other symptoms we’ve noted above. It may be an indication that you’re not getting a good night’s sleep.

Can Sleep Apnea Be Treated?

There are plenty of options available for treating and managing sleep apnea. While CPAP machines are probably the solution that most people are familiar with, there are also dental appliances, surgical procedures, and lifestyle improvements that can help address the condition. Be sure to speak with your doctor about sleep apnea and what treatments might be most ideal for you.
