Common Dental Treatments for Seniors
At different stages of life, the body changes and requires unique care and attention in order to maintain health. The same is true of the mouth and oral health. The dental needs of a child will differ from those of a teen just as the dental needs of an adult will likely be different than those of a senior. At Dr. Michael Bixby’s cosmetic dentistry practice, we aim to meet the full range of dental needs for all of our patients, regardless of age. We take special care in offering our Red Bank patients an array of dental treatments for seniors. We strongly believe that, just because the body has aged, there is no need to sacrifice the health or beauty of the smile.
Senior patients are more likely to require treatment for more advanced stages of tooth decay, gum disease, weakened teeth, and tooth loss. These are simply dental conditions that become more prevalent as the teeth age and wear down over time. Fortunately, Dr. Bixby offers dental treatments that allow our senior patients to treat these health conditions and keep the teeth looking healthy and attractive. Some of the dental treatments that are commonly required by our senior patients include:
- Dental crowns: Dental crowns are a common dental treatment for seniors because they are so versatile. Whether a tooth has extensive decay, has become weak, or is simply aesthetically flawed, a dental crown can cover and protect the tooth in order to restore strength, function, and beauty.
- Dental bridges: A dental bridge is used to address tooth loss. A dental bridge is composed of a pontic piece (which is the piece that replaces the missing tooth/teeth) and two dental crowns on either side of the pontic that hold the dental bridge in place. A dental bridge can maintain the structure of the mouth and restore the function of missing teeth.
- Dental implants: Dental implants are another treatment for missing teeth. Dental implants are implanted surgically and actually fuse with the jaw bone, making them the most stable dental restoration. Dental implants are able to anchor dental crowns, dental bridges, and even permanent dentures.
- Scaling and root planing: Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning that is performed to treat gum disease. Gum disease occurs when there is bacteria trapped beneath the gum line. As gum disease worsens, the gums pull back from the teeth and may eventually cause tooth loss. Scaling and root planing removes bacteria and plaque from beneath the gums in order to restore the health of the gums and promote new growth of healthy gum tissue.
For many of our senior patients, a number of these treatments are required to fully restore the health, function, and beauty of the teeth. These patients can undergo full mouth reconstruction, a customized dental treatment that allows Dr. Bixby to address multiple dental problems.
