Family DentistryCurrently, laser periodontal therapy is used to treat gum disease and for cosmetic gum re-contouring. It has proven to be an exceptional alternative to traditional surgical treatments. The laser beam can be precisely directed to only the tissues needing treatment, and the way it works virtually eliminates bleeding and sterilizes the area at the same time. All of this translates to higher quality treatment, improved outcome, and greater comfort for the patient.
The laser removes only the infected gum tissue lining the tooth pocket wall. Any tartar is removed from the root surface. Then the laser disinfects the area, selectively killing all bacteria. The resulting small, sterile wound is sealed to the root surface with a dense fibrin clot.
With conventional methods not all bacteria can be eliminated, so recurrence is a common problem. Laser therapy stops the infection and eradicates all bacteria, leaving the gum pocket disease free. Gum tissue has time to heal and sometimes can even reattach to normal depth. As there is no need for incisions or stitches there is no bleeding or swelling. The patient endures little to no discomfort during the procedure, and can expect a very short recovery time.
